Joseph A. Gibbs served on active duty for 8 years with two years in Vietnam. From April 1, 1967 until July 19, 1967, LT Gibbs served as 2nd Platoon Leader of 'H' Co, 11th Armored Cavalry Squadron during the early phases of Operation Junction City II. His call sign was Blaster 26. His platoon deployed with Task Force Oregon and later was attached to another unit for combat operations at Chu Lai. He served as boat commander for both the trip up to Chu Lai and the return trip to Blackhorse Base Camp. From July 20, 1967 until December 10, 1967, LT Gibbs served as Executive Officer of 'H' Company. The Commanding Officer was CAPT Arthur Russell. On his second Vietnam tour, he served as a staff officer with II Field Force Headquarters located in Bien Hoa, VN.
During his active duty, he received numerous awards to include the Soldiers Medal which is the nations highest award for life saving, the Meritorious Service Medal, two awards of the Bronze Star, and two Army Accommodation Medals. He retired as Lieutenant Colonel from the Army Reserve after 34 years. He presently lives in Suffolk, Virginia.
